No matter where the doctor and the anesthesiologist are going to perform a rhinoplasty surgery, there will be a cost for the facility. This cost includes and nurses or other staff necessary for the procedure, equipment and supplies to be used and the facility’s general overhead whether that is a rhinoplasty being performed in an office or one being done in a hospital. Obviously, if there is a reason that the work must be performed in a hospital, there is going to be a higher charge involved than merely the fee charged for a simpler office procedure. And finally, this fee will include any costs involved in the anticipated recovery after the surgery. If a small procedure has been performed and a local anesthetic was administered, a short time after completion, the patient may be up, walking around, feeling fine and ready to leave after a final examination by the surgeon. However, if the work was more complex, if an anesthetic was necessary to keep the patient asleep for several hours, if the pain quotient is expected to be higher due to the nature of the problem being addressed, it will be several hours after the surgery has been completed before the patient will be awake and several more hours before the patient is examined and allowed to leave.
All of these factors will affect the facility fee (as well as all other costs involved) and should be completely discussed beforehand. Applying the total monies spent on facility fees and dividing that by the number of surgeries performed, we arrive at an approximate average facility fee, nationally, of $700. If you are being charged substantially more or less than that you should ask why and the doctor’s answers should adequately explain the difference.
In some instances, the doctor may be offering a “package price” which would include his fee, the anesthesiologist’ fee and the facility fee as one number. If this makes you uncomfortable for any reason or if the total price for the work you are requesting does not feel proper, ask for a breakdown.
Remember, the numbers quoted here are from compiled figures published by American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) under the category rhinoplasty cost. There are two factors to take into account with these numbers:
1. The category “rhinoplasty cost” includes any surgery performed by a licensed surgeon operating on the nose. This can range from the removal of a simple bump, the repair of a simple skin tear or even hiding a small scar, up to a complete nasal reconstruction. As the complexity of the work increases, as the skill and artistry required of the surgeon increases, so does the cost.
2. Many rhinoplasty costs are hidden by doctors who have no problem billing their work to unsuspecting insurance companies as a repair of a “deviated septum” to “improve breathing difficulties” which would then be partially covered. This practice has become prevalent in the industry as the work can be performed and the client can save 60% or more of the total costs. Be aware if your doctor intends to bill your insurance company. For generations people have been saying that laughter is good medicine. And now the scientists have taken an interest it turns out great-grandma was right. However it is extremely easy to get humor wrong. And a joke that’s sent to someone who doesn’t see the funny side will create more ill health through raised blood pressure than a few laughs could ever cure.
So what’s the answer? How do we harness humor and make it work for us, not against us?
People often say that the internet’s international nature makes it an unsuitable environment for humor for fear of it not translating across national boundaries - and inadvertently causing offense. But there are a couple of simple rules which - although not universal panaceas that always work - can help you use humor without risk.
Use humor about situations, not people. If you think about it, the butt of many jokes and other humor is a person or group of people, so it’s hardly surprising that offense is caused. The more extreme types are obvious - mother-in-law jokes, blonde jokes, women jokes, men jokes - but there are many more subtle ones too.
Then there are the nationality gags. I remember in one year hearing exactly the same joke (in three different languages) told by an American about the Polish, by a Canadian about Newfoundlanders, by a French person about Belgians, by a French-speaking Belgian about the Flemish, and by a Flemish person about the Dutch.
Obviously most humor is going to involve people in one way or another. But as long as the butt of the joke is a situation or set of circumstances, not the people, you’re far less likely to upset anyone. And there is an added advantage here. Whoever they are and wherever they come from, people will usually identify with a situation. Take this one for example…
Some people are driving along at night and are stopped by a police car. The officer goes to the driver and warns him that one of the rear lights on his SUV isn’t working. The driver jumps out and looks terribly upset. The officer reassures him that he won’t get a ticket, it’s just a warning, so there’s no problem. “Oh yes there is a problem,” says the man as he rushes towards the back of the car. “if you could see my rear lights it means I’ve lost my trailer.”
As the butt of the joke is the broken rear light and the loss of the trailer, not the policeman or the driver, no-one can be offended. And most people can identify with how that would feel.
The other key issue with humor is wordplays, puns, and anything else that’s based on figurative speech, slang, or jargon. The short answer is they don’t work internationally. However if the play or double entendre is in the concept rather than the words, it probably will work.
These may be funny to us, but would not be understood by anyone who is not a good English speaker because there is a play on the words:
* Deja moo: The feeling that you’ve heard this bull before. * The two most common elements in the universe are hydrogen and stupidity.
These, however, probably would be understood because the humor is in the concept, not in the words themselves:
* You don’t stop laughing because you grow old. You grow old because you stop laughing. * The trouble with doing something right the first time is that nobody appreciates how difficult it was.
Overall, I think it’s wise to use humor as a spicy condiment in your business comms. And just as you would with the chili powder, use it in moderation if you don’t know the audience well … and if you know they have a very sensitive palate, don’t use it at all!

Remember when the body mass index chart first came out? People
were running to calculators trying to find out if they are considered overweight and unhealthy. Many, especially athletes, were quickly shocked to find out they were labeled obese. I’m even talking about lean professional athletes who were the picture perfect image of strength, power, and health.
After calculating their body mass index (BMI), many were shocked to find out their calculated number indicated a detriment to their health. So how do you calculate this number anyway? First off, you can be lazy and go to consumer.gov/weightloss/bmi.htm, and have the computer tell you the answer. However, if you want to calculate it yourself simply multiply your weight in pounds by 703 then divide the square of your height in inches. It is that simple.
Now after using a body mass index calculator you get your big
number. What does it mean? In most cases, not a heck of a lot.
First of all, your BMI doesn’t distinguish muscle from fat. You could have a body fat percentage of 8%, with a lot of added muscle, and the body mass index chart will say you are obese, and could be at risk for significant health issues. Now let’s take the opposite. Suppose you have never exercised a day in your life and your body fat is 30%, but you weight less than the fit person with an 8% level of body fat. The BMI chart might suggest your weight is right where it should be, and you are at very little risk for health challenges.
This is where the BMI Chart is misleading. Recent studies have
even shown a weak and inconsistent correlation between a high
BMI and disease or early mortality.
How then can we get an accurate assessment of our link between
weight, and disease? My recommendations are to incorporate
a multiple assessment such as the following:
1. Body fat percentage should be calculated and considered.
2. Take measurements of you waist, hips, and height.
Calculate your waist-to-hip ratio, divide the waist measurement
by the hip measurement. Men should be under 0.9, and women
should be under 0.8. A good guideline for men is to keep their
waists well under 40 inches, and women under 35 inches.
Your waist should be one half your height. Now these are rough
estimates since many factors go into determining your risk
level. For instance, how much exercise do you get? What
type of foods do you consume?
However, If your numbers are not in the zone mentioned above, it is time to take action and start exercising and cutting back on
calories.
Always consider your body fat percentage versus your lean
muscle tissue. Keep the body fat as low as possible,
preferably under 30% for both men and women.
Don’t rely on the body mass index charts to dictate your
chance for disease. Use the multiple approach I have
outlined above. It is an intelligent approach for aiding your health and well-being.

5. Ensure your map shows your starting point, your destination and the
intervening area.
Entering uncharted territory, know how to prepare a map adequate for
your purposes and fine tune it as your vision becomes clearer.
6. From your map be able to set a compass bearing allowing for magnetic
deviation.
The best tools are useless unless we know how to use them properly.
7. Know how to fix your position by taking bearings on recognizable fixed
points.
Once you have mastered this skill you need never be lost again. What
are the fixed points in your life?
8. Be prepared for what the map does not tell you…
…the season of year, the weather to be expected and in your current
project, what else?
9. From your map be able to recognize those hazards which it is advisable to
circumnavigate…
…and the conditions under which doing so becomes vital.
10. A line on a map depicting a footpath does not necessarily mean a track
which can be seen on the ground.
No signs may have been left by the last traveler. When you are familiar
with navigation and have a map that will pose no problem.
