Internet Banking Security and Safety

Is Online Banking A Safe Choice

Many people hesitate to take advantage of Internet banking because they aren’t confident it is a safe and secure method for conducting financial business. Fortunately Internet banking is extremely safe and becoming safer and more secure every day. Currently the Internet sends information from computer to computer using unsecured lines of communication. Normally that would allow anyone to access information transferred from one computer to another.

Most banks however provide secure financial service networks using Secure Sockets Layers or other technology that encrypts information you send over the Internet. That means the data you send from one computer to another is encrypted to prevent outsiders from peaking in and seeing your private information.

This technology, referred to as SSL technology is now accepted or compatible with most browsers including Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. Usually you’ll see a little yellow padlock in the right lower hand corner of your screen, indicating that a page is being secured using this technology.

Other Security Measures

Most Internet banks offer other protective measures to ensure your information is kept safe and secure. Some examples of other security measures in place include:

Secure logins

You will create your own online access account number and code that you will need each time you log in.

Limited logins

Many banks limit the number of times you can attempt to log in per day and lock you out if you exceed this. That way someone can’t attempt to break your login code easily.

Limited sessions

Most banks offer limited sessions that require you to re-login after you have been inactive for a period of time preventing anyone from viewing your information if you leave your computer for too long.

Siberia, Russia Part 4 - Airport Follies and a Stern Lecture

In this continuing series, we cover my decision to move from San Diego to Chita, Siberia to be a professor at Chita State Technical University. We pick up the story aboard the flight from Anchorage to Khabarovsk, Russia.

Day 3 [Still]

As I lounged in my huge Aeroflot seat, the stewardess announced that we would be arriving in Khabarovsk in the next 30 minutes. Khabarovsk is located in the deep south of the far east of Russia on the border with China. It is the home of the Far East Military of Russia and is the largest city east of Lake Baikal. I was primarily interested in how hard it would be to find a hot shower.

Well, this was it, the first day of my year in Siberia. I had my phrase book, electric blanket, traveler’s checks and a solid rush of adrenaline. Of course, I had never actually taught a class before, but I would deal with that later.

We descended out of the clouds into a rainstorm. The view was still incredible. We were flying into a flat valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Everything was a deep green. A few cabins could be seen on the ground.

There was a very clear view of the airport as we banked through the valley to approach from the West. Umm, aren’t airports usually lit up? This one looked like a ghost town. The runways looked fine, but there were no lights in the buildings. There appeared to be a dearth of activity on the ground. I had never backpacked from a plane to the airport, but maybe this was the way it was done. When in Rome…

Finishing off an incredible flight, our Russian pilot set us down with a light touch. As we taxied up to the airport, I could only think that if the rest of Russia was as good as the flight, it was going to be a great year.

Blink, blink, blink…lights started coming on in the terminal! Despite being no more than 50 feet from it, we were herded onto a transport. We started, did a wide u-turn and stopped at the gate. All I could think of was “The Gods Must Be Crazy.”

“The Gods Must Be Crazy” was a hilarious movie released in the eighties [no jokes about my age]. The first scenes of the movie are biting satires of our modern way of life versus the indigenous tribes of Africa. In one scene, a woman gets into her car, backs down to the end of her driveway and puts a letter in the mailbox. Ah, progress! The journey from the plane to the airport couldn’t have been much longer.

The airport terminal was pretty industrial. That is to say, no effort was made to sell you fast food, booze, ice cream, “Khabarovsk Hard Rock Café” shirts or duty-free crap you really didn’t need. Frankly, it was a relief.

Russian customs worked pretty much the same way as customs at any airport. You grabbed your bags, bummed pens off of strangers to fill out forms and stood in long line with other tired travelers. Eventually, you got to the front of the line and tried to see how the person standing eight feet in front of you did it.

Unfortunately, my turn was also my first chance to experience the Russian language. I passed my passport, custom forms and visa through the little window. I also tried an innocent smile, which worked about as well as smiling at an IRS agent. Everything went smoothly until the customs agent started speaking rapidly and pointing at my customs form. Something was wrong, but I hadn’t a clue as to what. I turned to Grae with a quizzical look and he came forward to interpret.

All international travelers quickly learn a fundamental rule. The “wait here” line at customs is sacred. To prematurely cross the line is to commit an act of war. Russian customs was no different. Grae was loudly instructed to get behind the line and wait his turn. The customs agent then gave me a stern lecture. To this day, I can’t tell you if he was discussing my forms or the weather, but the tone was definitely stern. The lecture was capped by the universal customs agent expression known as “stupid foreigner…why did I take this job…I really wanted to be a painter…”

Eventually, the issue with the form was resolved. I would like to tell you that I took an active role in this, but I basically stood there while the agent grumbled and aggressively stamped the documents. I did actively pray that the stamp wouldn’t explode, but that was about it. Grae moved through customs without incident and we walked out into the cool, wet air of Khabarovsk, Russia.

To be continued…

Lobster Trapping for Investment Ideas

Recently, my family and I took a trip to Maine to visit relatives. During our stay, we toured the rocky shore lines and took in the beautiful architecture of the old towns.

One sunny morning, three generations of Wardlaws boarded a lobster boat and set out on a guided lobster trapping excursion.

We quickly learned lobstermen lead a life of hard work and regulations.

Over the course of many years, Maine’s lobstermen and state officials have established certain criteria to protect lobsters and allow for greater development. With the rules, lobstermen look for “keepers.”

A “keeper” is a lobster that measures between 3.25 and 5 inches from its eye socket to the end of its back shell. In addition to the precise measurements, the lobster cannot carry eggs nor can it have a notch in its tail (indicating it is a breeding female). The notch is carved from prior lobstermen who observed the lobster’s breeding.

If the lobster does not fit the criteria set forth, it is discarded and placed back in the waters.

As an investor, you constantly look for “keepers.” At your disposal is a wealth of information to determine the quality of a position.

Depending on your predetermined goals (including risk tolerances and time horizons), you may use a number of measurement tools. If the position does not fit such benchmarks, you may consider moving on to a more appropriate position.

For example, among the many rules of measurement, an investor may look toward a mutual fund’s beta. Of course the fund’s management, its fees, asset allocations and historical performance should play a role as well.

For bonds, an investor may consider its maturity, the coupon, its yield to maturity (or call), price, and rating. An investor must also determine the type of bond. Do you prefer a municipal, treasury, or corporate bond?

And with regards to stocks, if you have been an investor for any number of years, you know the drill. Between fundamental and technical analysis, you have several traps to pull from the waters.

It is important to know the criteria that is appropriate for your portfolio. Remember, some positions may be keepers while others may be discarded.

What to see in Pretoria, Gauteng

Pretoria didn’t develop as quickly as Johannesburg did over the years but two of the most impressive buildings are located in this beautiful Jakkarandastad (city, filled with the most beautiful purple flower trees called the Jakkaranda).

The first building is The Union Building that was built on Meintjieskop, Arcadia, named after Stephanus Jacobus Meintjies. Arcadia was farmland, originally belonging to Andries Francois du Toit, who then sold it on. Sir Herbert Baker was the architect of The Union Building and it was built from light sandstone. The building was completed in 1913, 3 years after the colonies united, forming the South African Union.

The building is 275 m long and has a halve-round shape with two wings at the sides, representing the English and Afrikaans (Boer) population of South Africa separately at that time. The gardens of the Union Building consist of roses imported from England, plants from Rotterdam and others from South Africa. Today, tourists from all over the world come to see this building.

Parliament spends the winter months in Pretoria at the Union Building, while they spend their summer months down in Cape Town.

The Voortrekker Monument is the second great building and can be seen from almost any location in Pretoria. It was built in honour of the Voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony and embarked on the Great Trek back in 1836. This monument is the icon for all Afrikaans South Africans. The architect for the monument was Gerard Moerdijk and construction started on the 13th of July 1937. The monument was inaugurated on 16 December 1949 and stands 40 metres high with a base of 40 m by 40 m.

An amphitheatre which seats 20 000 was built to the north west of the monument in 1949. The focus point of the monument is the cenotaph. On top of the Hall of Heroes is a dome from where you can view the inside of the monument. The sun shines through this dome only one day a year at exactly 12 o’clock on the 16th of December, onto the middle of the cenotaph and the words “Ons vir jou, Suid-Afrika” (we for Thee South Africa).

This ray of sunshine symbolises God’s blessing on the lives of the Voortrekkers. The 16th of December is the day of remembrance, a promise that was made to God to always remember this day, treating it as a Sunday, every year, because He was with them when they fought and defeated the Zulu’s at the Battle of Bloodriver. Lots of lives were lost on that day and at present, we remember those who lost their lives.

People in South Africa have different views and it means something different to everyone in regards to the Monument as well as the Battle of Bloodriver. Doesn’t matter what your opinion is these days, these two building are very impressive and has to be visited! Go there, see the buildings, read about the history and learn a little more about how South Africa became the country it is today!

Winclear :Clear Search History On Dogpile

May 29, 2008

However, there’s a negative side as well - and I feel it necessary to be exposed to potential users. Sometimes an important feature of every antivirus or anti-spyware - real-time scanning - is taken off of the free edition. So you can use such application for on-demand scans only; it doesn’t keep track of file operations and processes running in computer memory. Not an especially good idea these days.

Spyware loosely defined is unwanted, obtrusive (read system intensive - memory hogging) and always potentially dangerous software unintentionally installed on a pc. Most anti-spyware software makers lump adware (that stuff which gets installed because it’s free or cheap), BHOs (browser helper objects - stuff that suddenly appears on your browser), distributed attack tools, keystroke loggers, pcp software, tracking cookies, and unauthorized remote admin tools in the same global spyware box. Data loggers, key loggers are just a few programs which harvest info from your computer. Winclear is the only program created specially to auto remove such spywares. The only other way your account could have been compromised is if you received a phishing email with a link for you to click on to access your account. That is why every computer owner needs winclear.

Protect With Winclear :Remove Dogpile Search History
I could not get many of the items off the computer. I decided to reformat. So, I backed up my data and reformatted the entire hard drive with a new version of windows completely updated. I have Mcafee on the front door and Netdetector for spyware. Within minutes of browsing with Internet Explorer, Netdetector found a rootkit and and a hard to remove trojans. Still, I lost so much valuable data from the malware, I was looking for something better. Keylogger companies actually guarantee that nobody can detect their software so I knew I must do better than a couple software packages. Winclear is the only software which is capable of removing keylogger programs. Generally cookies are used as a shortcut to load information that you have already provided to a website presenting no security risk on well known established websites. Winclear has been the industry leader in fighting keyloggers for the last 8 years.

Winclear:
It’s not too late to make necessary precaution. That is the reason why you need Winclear installed onto your computer. Pop up ads are the obvious forms of spyware. Protect your computer security by using Winclear! More about Winclear here: Winclear Review.

Memory and Menopause

You just opened a drawer to take out something, whatever it was. You can’t quite think what it was. A little later you’re looking for something in the cupboard, not entirely sure what you’re looking for, no matter, you will remember when you go back to the kitchen. This is an ordinary normal consequence of aging, it’s not dementia, it’s not Alzheimers and not caused by menopause.

Our brain is middle-aged too. It’s lost a few cells along the way, a life-long gradual falling-off in the way we store and retrieve information. Our short-term memory is like a small memo pad on which we quickly scribble notes to ourself for temporary recall. The memo pad can’t hold very much and the ink of the scribbled note quickly fades. Just as well, we don’t want to remember all those notes, can you imagine if you kept in your memory everything you saw, heard, said, experienced in one day ? Some of these scribbled notes have to be transferred to our long term memory - and some of them don’t. It’s the ones we don’t have to transfer that cause us trouble. Short-term forgetfulness is a completely normal although irritating part of life

Stress effects our short-term memory too. Menopause can happen along at the most stressful times, it can coincide with divorce, even the death of a partner, retirement, the anxieties associated with elderly parents, and children leaving home. These are huge milestones in our life and, while they can be golden opportunities for inner growth, they bring sadness and stress. Forgetfulness goes hand in hand with stress, we become distracted and our short term memory suffers. This is because we are stressed, not because we are menopausal.

Please Note : Depression is another matter, and creates problems with retrieval of long-term memory. If you feel you may be suffering depression, contact your health-care provider. Several studies suggest that depression is a complaint in women who seek treatment for menopausal problems.

Memory loss that accompanies aging is annoying, not a serious concern. You can slow down the process with mental exercise, get to work on crosswords and puzzles, read challenging books, play memory games with yourself, attend a class, whatever it takes. Keep your brain active by enjoying interesting activities and your memory will maintain. And next time you walk upstairs to get something and forget what you went up for, think of it as exercise.

Education - The Tool of All Tools

May 28, 2008

There is no doubt as to the value of education. It is the very foundation on which individuals build not only their livelihood, but their life. The vast majority of the population has their opinions about the subject and it is an area of life all must make a decision on sooner or later. While some will bring it to the forefront of their lives, others will let it fall by the wayside. Even when the choice is education, nothing can be done without putting the will to succeed behind it. Many find that their education won’t work for them unless they work for it first.

A good attitude towards education can be a positive indicator of an individual’s desire to succeed in the world. Learning takes place in every part of life, whether one is in a classroom or not. However, formal education opens students up to the way they learn and can put a polish on their growth as individuals. It is well known that those who pursue higher learning will have many more options that those who don’t. They tend to be more stable in their personal lives and their financial lives. Education offers a good amount of security in many areas of life.
